- Rumors suggest EOS R7 Mark II should be in Q3 or Q4 this year
- Sources show that Mark II could have a 40MP APS-C sensor
- No official message from Canon
The Canon EOS R7 was the company’s first flagship mirror-free model built around an APS-C sensor. Launched in 2022 we gave great praise in our in-depth review and it is still a fantastic hybrid camera today. But with fierce competition in the middle -class market, it is quickly approaching the time for Canon to introduce another edition of R7.
If online chatter appears exactly, that’s exactly what could arrive later in the year. We are still a bit away from a particular launch date, but Canon rumors – a reliable source of industrial information – have published a story that claims it expects EOS R7 Mark II to hit shelves in 3rd quarter or Q4 in 2025. It also suggests the model will go “Upmarket”.
Canon rumors did not share further details about what we can expect to look at the spec sheet for the EOS R7 Mark II, and the manufacturer itself is still tight. But a quick look at the shortcomings of the original R7 should offer a few clues. It can also give Fujifilm something to worry about: an upgraded EOS R7 Mark II could surpass the X-T5-the best Fujifilm camera you can buy right now.
What specifications could the Canon EOS R7 Mark II have?
One of the most important upgrades for the EOS R7 Mark II is probably its sensor. While the R7’s 32.5MP number was the class on the field when it was launched, it was then trumped by the X-T5 with its 40.2MP resolution. For this reason, a number of sources – including cannon rumors – have suggested that Canon will increase the resolution of the EOS R7 Mark II to about 40MP.
Some have suggested that the sensor upgrade could also unlock 8K video recording features. It would definitely make it a more powerful hybrid. It would also the ability to shoot 4K/120p video, a feature that was missing on the first general EOS R7.
Physically, we would not expect Mark II to be a huge departure from the established form factor for EOS R7. That said, Canon Rumors has assumed that Mark II will have a larger body, with ergonomics closer to the EOS R5 Mark II.
Several sources have also recorded whether the EOS R7 Mark II will benefit from significantly faster reading speeds. Canon Rumors has dangled the idea that the EOS R7 Mark II will be the first Canon Mirrorless camera to eliminate a mechanically closing completely, as the Nikon Z8 likes to deliver faster image speeds and reduced rolling closures.
Paired with Canon’s latest topic that tracks autofocus, this would make Mark II a strong choice of crop sensor for serious enthusiasts, especially those who like to shoot action, sports and wildlife. To match, we would expect to see an upgrade to the dissolution of the electronic viewfinder, which we found “a small pedestrian” in our review of R7.
Of course, all of the above is based on speculation and nothing has been confirmed by Canon. That said, the EOS R7 Mark II is almost certain to be a major progress for Canon’s APS-C-Line-Up and one offering a compelling alternative to Fujifilm’s X series.
