Canon has just teased its next camera on its Facebook page and other social media accounts, confirming a November 6th launch at 01:00 ET / 06:00 UK / 16:00 AEST launch (that’s November 5th at 22:00 PT).
In the teaser, the camera is mounted on a tripod during blue hour in a mountainous terrain and is mostly silhouetted, but there is enough detail for me to draw a few conclusions.
Firstly, the lens is mounted on the Canon RF 24-105mm F4L IS USM zoom camera, which is a full-frame lens.
Then there is the silhouette of the camera, which is the same profile as the EOS R6 II / EOS R5 II. Given the EOS R5 II is a recent release – which takes our Best Camera of the Year 2024 award – that leaves a successor to the EOS R6 II, presumably called the Canon EOS R6 III, or an entirely new model.
I’ve been keeping an eye on the Canon rumor mill, and there are plenty of indications that the EOS R6 III may indeed be the next Canon camera we see. If so, it could be the biggest launch of the year for the market leader.
What the rumors say
We don’t know for sure what Canon’s next camera will be, but if it’s an EOS R6 III, what can we expect?
According to the latest rumors, the EOS R6 III is set to compete with the Nikon Z6 III and the dated Sony A7 IV (which is rumored to be updated soon with the potential A7 V). It’s also tipped to have the same 34.2MP sensor (delivering 32MP stills) as the latest EOS C50.
A jump from 24MP to 32MP would be a decent upgrade, especially if the EOS R6 III also shoots open gate 7K video like the EOS C50, as Canon Rumors suggests. The sensor will probably also be stabilized as it is a model in the EOS R6 series, unlike the EOS C50 cinema camera.
Three years between releases would no doubt result in performance improvements, particularly autofocus and burst shooting. Rumor has it that Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF II with improved subject detection will be on board, and 40fps burst shooting (using the electronic shutter) with pre-capture.
Put these potential upgrades together and the EOS R6 III could become one of the most popular full-frame cameras, and I expect it to disrupt our best camera guide, especially with its predicted price tag of €2,899 (around $3,100 / £2,700 / AU$5,000 based on current market conditions).
