- Windows 11 24h2 has an error that can break security updates completely
- This only applies to those who have installed using media such as a USB stick
- It affects certain versions of Windows 11 24h2 from the end of last year and the fix is a reinstallation using a newer version
This is very strange: Some people who have installed Windows 11 24H2 (which is now more widespread) have been left unable to receive security updates for the desktop operating system due to the specific installation package they used.
Confused? I wouldn’t blame you, like when this first caught my eye, it made me wonder what on earth could have been doing here.
And in fact, I can’t give you an answer to it, but the problem here is actually pretty simple to explain and kind of easy to fix (if a bit of a trouble in terms of being time -consuming and I will get back to it later).
Windows 11 24H2 Installation problem – what has happened
So what happened here is that Microsoft has somehow made a mess in Windows 11 24h2 media installation packages created based on October 2024 or November 2024, security updates.
These would have been used by many people who installed Windows 11 24h2 from scratch these months, which they were (at the time) the most up -to -date copies of the operating system.
As for the exact problem here, Microsoft explains: “When using media to install Windows 11, Version 24H2, the device may remain in a state where it cannot accept further Windows security updates.”
The second key bit here is the mention of ‘When using Media’, which means this error affects those who used a drive – such as a USB stick or other media as a DVD – and the media creation tool to install Windows 11.
Other users are not affected here, so if you did not use the tool for media creation, this is not a problem you need to worry about. Meaning that if you installed Windows 11 24h2 via Windows update inside us, then you’re ready.
What to do if security updates are broken on your PC
What is pretty strange here is that this question was recognized by Microsoft on December 24, 2024, but has only just been treated and marked as ‘loosely’ in Windows 11 release Heath -Status -Dashboard a few days ago.
And Microsoft’s advice to this decision is honestly about the very obvious. Wouldn’t you want this problem caused by Windows 11, version 24h2, October 2024 or November 2024 Security Update Versions? Then do not use October 2024 or November 2024 Security Update Versions for Windows 11 installation.
Thanks for that. I had never guessed anything else.
Either way, in the future, if you are installing Windows 11 24H2 via media, simply make sure you use the latest version (and certainly not one you may have kicked around from the end of last year).
If you have already installed Windows 11 24h2 in this way and have come across the problem where you can no longer get security updates installed – which is obviously a bad thing, which leaves you open to utilize potentially – then you need to take action.
In this case, reinstall Windows 11 24h2 and make sure to use December 2024 version (or later). It involves running the same installation process that you performed when you grabbed 24h2 late last year – just make sure to choose to keep your personal data and apps when running the installation process and all you need to lose is some time to Wait for the reinstallation to end.
I say shouldBecause you never fully know what can happen when you do any major OS operation, as a reinstallation is definitely. So you always have to back up your files before proceeding.
It is worth noting that Microsoft observes that this error where updates can no longer be installed on the Windows 11 PC “Might”, so that is not necessarily the case. This means you could be doing well even if you used installation media and October or November 2024 Taste of Windows 11 24h2.
That said, this question may still appear later down the line – who knows – so be prepared to perform a reinstall at the time if it does.
