- Capcom’s Resident Evil Requiem just got a new short film with Maika Monroe
- It shows the story of a mother and child from the Raccoon City outbreak
- The trailer’s ending may tease the return of a major character
Resident Evil Requiem is less than a month away, with launch set for February 27th, and Capcom has stepped up its marketing efforts – this time with an unexpected trailer.
Capcom released a new live-action short film called ‘Evil Has Always Had A Name’ with It follows and Long legs actress Maika Monroe. Its story follows a mother and her child before, during and after the Raccoon City outbreak.
There are several easter eggs in the trailer, namely the silhouette of Resident Evil 3‘s Nemesis hidden in smoke, and the classic ‘STARS’ vocal line in the background. We also have the Gun Shop Kendo shop briefly shown during the night of the outbreak, and a lick which apparently leads to the heartbreaking death of the main character’s daughter.
Most importantly, we see the same image of Raccoon City’s crater that has been present in almost all of them Requiem‘s trailers. Assuming it’s set in the present day (or close enough), Monroe’s now-zombified character gives a monologue saying, ‘tell them I was still me, right to the end’, before being killed at her daughter’s gravesite.
Zombies can be sentient in Requiem
It may be best to use the term ‘zombie’ loosely. While the infected we have seen in Resident Evil Requiem are clearly not human, director Koshi Nakanishi noted, each retaining elements of their human personalities, even committing to the same daily tasks as they would when they were alive, complete with some speech.
However, this short film may have just hinted at the undead in Requiem being more sentient than we thought, possibly being fully aware of what is happening, maintaining memories and emotions, but without the ability to control themselves over their infection.
This won’t be the first time the franchise has attempted something like this: Resident Evil 4 featured enemies controlled by the Las Plagas parasite but still retaining human traits (albeit feral and violent).
Requiem looks to take a similar path, but one that will tug at gamers’ heartstrings if this short is anything to go by.
Was it Ada Wong in the end?
There is still so much we don’t know Resident Evil Requiemand it is lucky for many who want to go blindly into the experience. One thing we do know is that older characters will return, regardless of whether they’re from Resident Evil outbreak or the principal items of the franchise.
Ada Wong has been present in all of them Resident Evil game that features Leon S. Kennedy so far, and if this really is Leon’s last game for a long time, her appearance is more and more likely.
It is further supported by the end of this short film, where armed forces move into Raccoon City, with a voice saying very familiar with saying ‘Copy it. Raccoon City is ours.’
We know that Ada’s motivations and loyalty i Resident Evil games are shady and often work for shady companies or characters like Albert Wesker. It’s not far-fetched to suggest that this could actually be Ada Wong speaking, which will leave us wondering which side she’s really on come February 27th.
Regardless, Resident Evil Requiem is shaping up to be the franchise’s most ambitious title with emotional story beats and a potential conclusion to a saga that has been running since 1998.
