Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin moved to within three goals of breaking Wayne Gretzky’s scoring brand at all times as he net his 892. Goal against Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday night.
Those were the lonely goals of the capitals in their 5-1 losses for the hurricanes. He scored almost two in the game, but was stopped in point-glossy reach by goalkeeper Frederik Andersen in the second period. He ended up beating Andersen on a 5-to-3-power game later in the other.

“We have a pretty good chance in the second, first shift an outbreak,” Ovechkin said. “And in this game, if you have a chance, use it and I think all goalies are playing well tonight.”
Ovechkin recognized the playoff atmosphere in Raleigh, North Carolina. In the third period, eight players got games -miss relationship after more matches broke out.
“We understand that there is an opportunity to see them in the playoffs,” said Ovechkin. “It was a playoff -atmosphere out there.”

Washington and Carolina are the two top teams in the Metropolitan Division in the eastern conference. The capitals have 105 points and the hurricanes have 96.
“The Gr8 Chase” is still turned on, at least to seven more games. Ovechkin could close the record at the end of the weekend with a game against Chicago Blackhawks Friday night and then a road match against New York Islanders on Sunday.
Gretzky’s record of 894 career goals was once thought to be invincible, but Ovechkin is ready to defy the odds.

“(The record) feels like it’s right there,” Capitals defender Trevor Van Riem dive said. “He feels he is still scoring every night. It’s been huge for us and amazing for him to see that he is still doing it at this torrid pace.”
