ChatGPT had some issues – here’s everything we know

Here’s a look at the Down Detector where you can see the fairly rapid spike near the bottom of the hour for issues with ChatGPT and OpenAI.

OpenAI confirms an active issue with ChatGPT availability

OpenAI has confirmed an issue affecting the “availability” of ChatGPT, which would explain why some people are getting the “Hmm… something went wrong” error message back, indicating that they are trying to resend the message.

The good news is that OpenAI has identified the problem and is “working to implement a fix.”

If you’re wondering what these error messages look like, here’s what my colleague Eric Schwartz shared with me. He got this error back – “Hmm… something seems to have gone wrong.” on mobile but also received the below error on desktop.

“Something went wrong generating the response. If this problem persists, please contact us via our help center at help.openai.com.”

OpenAI has issued a further update, writing: “We are investigating the issue for the listed services.” from 12:50 p.m. ET. This may indicate that OpenAI’s team is still investigating what’s causing the issues, but I’ll also note that we’re seeing a slight drop in reports of Down Detector, down to 8,830.

While my ChatGPT Plus still responds, it takes a noticeably longer time to respond to queries, both simple and slightly more extravagant.

Many affected users are taking to social media to share their frustration, although my colleague Eric’s ChatGPT seems to be back…at least for a moment.

Well, even better news now! Along with reports of Down Detector hovering above 1,000, OpenAI has updated the incident on its status page to note that it is now monitoring recovery. And that means they’ve issued a fix for whatever the underlying problem was, causing a problem for “ChatGPT accessibility.”

The update reads, “We’ve applied the restriction and are monitoring the recovery,” which hopefully means ChatGPT will return to normal operation for you.
