Chilas, Bunji set new heating items

New extreme maximum temperature registers are set in Gilgit-Baltistan Chilas and Bunji areas, Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said in a statement.

PMD recorded a maximum temperature of 48.5 ° C in Chila on Saturday and broke the former historic extreme maximum record of 47.7 ° C on July 17, 1997.

The temperature registered in Bunji was 46.1 ° C. The former historic extreme maximum record was 45.6 ° C on July 12, 1971.

“These sustained high temperatures over the northern areas can speed up snow and glacier melting, triggering GLOF (Glacial Lake Outburst Flood) and flash flood events in vulnerable valleys and surrounding regions over the coming week,” PMD said.

Over 7.1 million people in GB and KP are vulnerable according to the Ministry of Climate Change.
