China unveils 5.4 billion Fujian, its most advanced aircraft carrier to date

China has launched its most advanced and expensive aircraft carrier to date.

Fujian, which costs 5.4 billion. £, is an 80,000 ton supercraft capable of carrying about 60 aircraft. Fujian stretches over 300 meters and cements China’s position as the world’s second largest carrier fleet.

Chinese President Xi Jinping oversaw the launch of the aircraft carrier, marking a significant leap in Beijing’s bid for power far beyond the country’s shores.

The carrier is built in-house and is equipped with advanced electromagnetic catapults. The ship is an expression of China’s ambition to operate a true blue-water navy capable of global reach and influence.

With its catapult launch system, the carrier is capable of launching heavy and fully loaded warplanes including an early warning and control aircraft.

This allows the carrier to operate against distant targets while far out at sea, as it does not rely on land-based reconnaissance aircraft to detect threats.

The Fujian is also able to carry more weapons and fuel, enhancing its range and firepower.

Earlier Chinese aircraft carriers, the Shandong and Liaoning had an upward-sloping ski jump deck, which was only able to carry lighter cargo and launch fighters with fewer weapons.

Another important feature of the Fujian is its electromagnetic catapult system, which makes it the second carrier in the world with such technology.

Previously, the USS Gerald R. Ford of the United States had such an advanced system.

Traditionally, the conveyors use steam systems rather than electromagnets. The steam catapults put more strain on both the plane and the ship, require more maintenance and take up more space.
