Shandur Polo Festival 2025 ended in spectacular way on Sunday when Chitral defeated Gilgit 9-7 in the last match played on the world’s highest polo ground before a number of thousands.
The final took place before thousands of spectators at Shandur Pass are often referred to as “the world’s roof” at an altitude of 12,000 feet that attracts both local crowds and foreign tourists.
This year, Gilgit’s ‘A’ team showed a particularly improved performance compared to previous editions. However, Chitral’s team played a solid defensive game that successfully blocked several goal attempts and maintained their lead to secure the victory.
Held from 20 to 22 June the festival was organized with the joint support of the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government, the Gilgit-Baltist government, the Pakistan army and the Frontier Corps Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (North).

The last day’s closing ceremony was attended by General Ecillion Umar Ahmad Bukhari, Corps Commander Peshawar, who attended as a main guest.
Thousands participated in the Grand Final, including many international visitors. In accordance with the tradition, the Pakistani army executed the elite SSG ‘Shahbaz’ team a spectacular revenue distribution display, while Army School of Physical Training, Kakul, impressed with a vibrant paragliding demonstration of the scenic landscape.
Adding to the festivities, a traditional Kalasha dance was performed, much to the delight of the crowd. The cultural showcase received enthusiastic applause and reflected the region’s various heritage.
During the ceremony, the Chief Guest presented Awards and Honors for players from both teams. In his speech, Lieutenant General Bukhari thanked all spectators, organizers and especially the foreign tourists to participate and support the festival.
He also praised the civil administration, security forces and local authorities for ensuring the success and security of the event.
