- A serious error has hit some older Chromecast units
- 2. Gen-chromecasts and Chromecast audio dingers are affected
- Google says it is now working on a solution to the problem
A strange bug has hit 2. Re-chromecast and Chromecast sounds, which prevents these devices from casting normal and users becoming increasingly angry when waiting for a solution to roll out to affected gadgets.
As reported by 9to5Google and Android Authority, the error appeared in the last few days and threw up a few error messages. All users are able to do is reject these messages and nothing else, which means the devices are almost useless.
One error message reads: “Not trusted device: [name] Could not be verified. This may be caused by outdated device company. “The other says,“ We couldn’t authenticate your Chromecast. “There are links to Chromecast Support, but there is nothing on these support sites to help with this specific problem.
Over to Reddit, there is plenty of venting that is going on – venting that Chromecasts are buggy in general and Google is slow to answer the problem. However, it now seems that an official solution is on the way.
Wait it out
Chromecast is not working. from r/Googlehome
Given that newer 3rd-gene Chromecast and Chromecast Ultra models have not been affected so far, there had been some speculation that Google was calmly withdrew on older devices without any warning for the people who used them.
However, that does not seem to be the case. Some studies of the questions about Reddit pointed out the blame on a server-side problem (looked out of the user’s control) and specifically a security certificate that had not been properly renewed.
The good news is that an official Google account on Reddit has sent to say that Google is aware of the problem and that engineers are working on a solution. In the meantime, the advice is just to wait for it and not to reset devices – which is the logical first step to try when something similar happens.
If you’ve already done a full reset on your Chromecast, Google says it will give you recovery instructions over time. In the meantime, we keep our eyes and ears open to the promised solution.
