Despite his familiarity with the pros, Sanders pointed to the NFL’s modern practice style as he revealed what would prevent him from taking a coaching job with any of the league’s 32 franchises.
“That’s how we practiced,” Sanders said. “I know it’s cute, but I couldn’t train Pro Ball. The way they practice as they go on, I couldn’t take it – as a man and as a football enthusiast. I’m interested in the game. … There is no way I could allow it to happen on my watch.

The Buffalos improved during Sanders in 2024, and the success added fuel to the idea Sanders could soon leave college football to the NFL.
This is not the first time Sanders has rejected the proposal that he would take the plunge to the NFL. In 2022 he told “60 minutes” he “couldn’t coach” at the pro level.
“I couldn’t coach Pro Ball,” he explained. “It’s not just about fame or money. It’s about the love of the game. The way things are done now, I couldn’t accept it. It would be hard for me to let it happen under my watch.”

Dallas eventually hired Brian Schottenheimer, but Aikman said it would “make a lot of sense” for Sanders to lead cowboys.
“I was asked a lot of questions about how do you think Deion would do?” Aikman told. “I said, ‘I think deion would do well.’ There are a small handful of people that I know I just didn’t want to bet against.

Aikman said he understood how Sanders could have more influence on university level.
“You do not impress on young men as you are in college, but to imply that he would not be good at it or successful to it, I do not think people really know Deion’s story. I think so, for Dallas, Deion would have been a really good fit because he would have commanded the room.
“His personality is such that people would have known that he was responsible. I think it is important for any organization to know that the head coach is the one who calls the shots and he is responsible.”
Aikman and Sanders played for cowboys when the team won the Super Bowl 1996.
