Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and former Punjab chief minister Hamza Shehbaz have been acquitted in Ramzan Sugar Mill’s corruption case.
The case, which had been underway since 2017, stammered from accusations that the Shehbaz family had facilitated the construction of a drainage system for Ramzan Sugar Mills in Chiniot, which led to a financial loss of RS213 million to National Exchequer, Express News reported , reported news
The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had filed a reference to the two political figures that accused them of corruption on the construction of the drainage system in 2015.
During the case, Anti-Corruption Court’s judge, Sardar Muhammad Iqbal Dogar, declared that there was no reason for conviction and that there was no punishment for the defendant.
Shehbaz Sharif was arrested in October 2018 while Hamza was taken into custody in June 2019. They were later awarded the bail by Lahore High Court.
The lawsuit included several key dates in which charges were charged, rejected and refilled, with both persons facing extensive detention periods during the trial.
Lasr Week, Ramzan Sugar Mills case took a dramatic turn as the complainant differs from the case and said in court that he had no objection to the acquittal of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his son Hamza Shehbaz Sharif.
By acting before the Anti-Corruption Court, complainant Zulfiqar Ali said Judge Sardar Muhammad Iqbal that he did not file the complaint against Sharifs, nor was he aware of the application in which the case was initiated.
“I withdraw this application,” he said. On this, Judge Ali ordered to submit a statement confirming his attitude.
Then Ali submitted the statement and reiterated that he had no involvement in the case. In his statement, he said he was not aware of the contents of the complaint, had not signed any application and lacked any knowledge of the construction of the wastewater drain near Ramzan Sugar Mills, which is in the heart of the case.
“I have no objection if Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his son Hamza Shehbaz Sharif are acquitted,” Ali said in his statement.
The judge asked if the complainant’s statement had previously been registered, as Ali responded negatively.
