Court reforms must ensure timely justice, says CJP

Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi has emphasized that litigation is important stakeholders in the justice system and must be treated with dignity and respect.

He made the comments during an advisory meeting with senior judicial officials on improving access to justice.

Chief Justice emphasized that reforms should not only facilitate case demands, but also ensure timely and effective justice.

The meeting attended by the top officials, including the Supreme Court’s registrar Muhammad Saleem Khan and the Federal Judicial Academy General General, reviewed ongoing legal reforms and digitization efforts.

Discussions highlighted progress in archiving digital case, transparency and accountability. The IT Directorate briefed participants to integrate new technologies to make legal processes more efficient.

A statement from the meeting noted that improvement of accessibility and efficiency remains a highest priority.

Currently, about 57,000 cases for the Supreme Court are awaiting the Pakistan Supreme Court, with an additional 2.4 million awaiting decision in other courts across the country.

According to the Office of the Secretary of Justice, 27,312 cases were established and 12,109 disposed of between October 28, 2024 and March 7, 2025, while 7,370 new cases were introduced during the same period.

Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi’s push for court reform aims to tackle the ongoing backlog and modernize the justice system.

The main reforms include the introduction of advanced information technology, such as the e-Assocdavit system to streamline archiving processes and reduce delays, and a case management system that provides laws and lawyers access to certified copies immediately.

In addition, feedback mechanisms involving legal professionals and the public have been implemented to strengthen confidence in the system.
