Crackdown on wheat smugglers

21 people have been arrested, 291 tons of flour and 28 tons of wheat have been found.

To prevent illegal transportation and smuggling of wheat and flour in Rawalpindi, the Food Ministry and Rawalpindi Police have set up joint check posts at 8 different locations. CCTV cameras have been installed for surveillance and efforts have also been initiated.

Already 21 cases have been registered, 21 people have been arrested and 291 tons of flour and 28 tons of wheat have been found.

When contacted by Express, District Food Controller Muhammad Ramzan said there is no restriction on the transportation of flour, but it is mandatory for those transporting flour and wheat to get a permit and during the inspection, action will be taken against those found transporting flour illegally without a permit.

According to police officials in Rawalpindi, joint teams of the food department and the police have also seized vehicles used to smuggle flour. Actions were taken against flour and wheat smuggling in the areas of Chakri, Taxila, Saddar Wah and the airport.

Officials said special cameras have been installed at all entry and exit routes in the city, while 8 special pickets have also been set up. Officials said, “Effective monitoring of flour and wheat smuggling is being carried out. The persons involved cannot escape the clutches of the law; prevention of flour and wheat smuggling is ensured as per the instructions of the Punjab government.”
