A deep depression is formed in the northeastern Arabian Sea and is likely to intensify itself to a cyclonic storm within the next 12 hours, Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) warned Friday.
When it develops into a cyclone, it will be named “Shakti” – meaning strength – a title suggested by Sri Lanka.
The system is currently located about 400 km south of Karachi. PMD said it had already been intensified in the last 12 hours, moved west and northwest, and is expected to strengthen further as it goes towards the central-northern Arab Sea over the next 24 hours.

Earlier this week, PMD had issued its third tropical cyclon alarm after a low-pressure system that brought rain to Karachi changed from India’s Gujarat region into the northeastern Arabic Sea near the Saurashtra coast.
At that time the system was approx. 310 km southeast of Karachi and expected to intensify himself for a depression as he moved west.
Cyclone Warning Center in Karachi said it is careful to monitor the development and will continue to issue advisers. Authorities have been invited to keep aware and keep the public updated through PMD advisers.
