New York Knicks advanced to the eastern conference final for the first time in a quarter of a century last month, and head coach Tom Thibodeau was credited to help Knicks end the franchise’s playoff drought.
Indiana Pacers won the series in six matches and has moved on to Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA final.
While it was widely believed that Knicks’ deep playoffs meant Thibodeau would return to a sixth season, the organization fired him on Tuesday.

Knicks has started a search for their next head coach. While Dan Hurley’s name has been linked to the job opening, Uconn head coach seems to have little interest in making jumped to the NBA.
“Not another summer with it,” Hurley told Hartford Courant.

This is not the first time that the two-time NCAA master coach name is linked to NBA rumors. Last summer, Hurley flew to Los Angeles to talk to Lakers about their coaching position.

Hurley rejected a six-year contract offer from Lakers in favor of returning to Storrs, Connecticut, to pursue a third title in a row. Hurley Coachede Huskies to the NCAA Division in Tournament Title in 2023 and 2024.
After Hurley’s rejection, Lakers turned and employed JJ Redick. The decision was fulfilled with some criticism due to Redick’s lack of experience.

Uconn had some ups and downs during the regular season 2024-25 and entered the NCAA tournament in 2025 as No. 8 seeds. Huskies lost against Florida Gators in the second round. Florida defeated Houston last month’s national championship game.
Hurley instead accepted a six-year extension with Uconn last summer. The deal binds him to Huskies through the 2029 season.
Elsewhere, another potential Knick’s coaching candidate came from the board on Wednesday when ESPN reported that Phoenix Suns had hired Jordan Ott as their next head coach.
