Tennis fans received drama, usually reserved for Broadway rather than flushing Meadows on Sunday night when Benjamin Bonzi disturbed Daniil Medvedev in the US Open.
Bonzi won the match 6-3, 7-5, 6-7 (5), 0-6, 6-4 over Medvedev. But the match was delayed for more than six minutes when Medvedev argued with the chairman’s judge.

Medvedev was furious by President Umpire Greg Allensworth’s decision to award his opponent a first serving after a photographer entered the court at the battle point. Allensworth asked the photographer to get off the field and that Bonzi would get another first serving due to the delay. Medvedev was in weapons over the decision.
“He wants to go home, guys. He doesn’t like to be here. He gets paid by the match, not by the hour,” he was heard on the microphones that tell the chair judge.
Medvedev said he was upset with the decision and did not think the interruption of the photographer was long enough to warrant the rest of the point. A spokesman for the US Tennis Association said the photographer was escorted from the court by the US Open Security and his legitimation was revoked.

“I wasn’t sorry for the photographer. I was sorry for the decision,” said Medvedev. “The delay from the photographer was probably four and a half seconds. I’m not sure it’s enough for a (first) serving.”
Medvedev also referred to Reilly Opelka’s previous criticism of the judge in Hans Tirade. He blew kisses to fans and encouraged high boos.
Bonzi suggested that Medvedev’s behavior crossed the line.
“I mean the rule is the rule. The guy went on the field between two serves,” Bonzi said. “I mean it’s not my call to say first serving. And I think, yes, Daniil started it and he put oil on the fire.”
