- Nine out of ten workers handle worksheets daily, says canva
- Formulas and complex sheets are the biggest obstacles
- Data newspaper is important for storytelling
New research from Canva has highlighted how much data companies are using, but the workers’ competence and confidence are behind, with “Data Dread” becomes increasingly common.
Most workers (89%) now handle spreadsheets daily, but still more than one in four (27%) would go so far as to avoid them if they could, with Canva’s research accusing training efforts of being ineffective.
Almost half (44%) of British organizations already provide data literature education, but four out of five (78%) professionals still claim to experience data anxiety relating to incompetence, not just a reluctance.
Canva says most workers feel “data fears”
Three-quarters (77%) of the 2,400 marketing and sales professionals reported that their dependence on data has increased over the past two years, with a similar number (74%) who want to be more effective with data in their daily work.
Although there appears to be some confidence in data analysis, some key areas were highlighted as missing, including formulas (46%) and understanding of overly complex spreadsheets (42%).
Canva leader of EMEA Duncan Clark said: “Working with data should not be limited to specialists. When you give teams the right tools and training to turn numbers into stories, you can lock so much potential in an organization.”
Although data can be powerful, Canva highlighted the importance of framing them properly with effective storytelling. Four out of five (82%) said they feel more confident when presenting with visualized data, with even more workers (89%) believing visualizations increase the credibility of their presentations.
“The goal is not to make everyone a data researcher, but to strengthen teams to make sure of the data available and make them compelling, engaging stories,” Clark added.
When looking ahead, it is clear that the educational effort has failed workers to date. Canva is in favor of providing more intuitive tools that make data handling to smooth and more user -friendly.
