- DJI Osmo Pocket 4 has passed FCC approval
- A launch may now be imminent
- DJI is racing to get ahead of a ban next month
It looks like we may soon be getting a successor to the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 – which we described as “class-leading” in our review – now that a new DJI vlogging camera has appeared at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the US.
Any gadget that wants to go on sale in the US must first get FCC approval, and as seen by New Camera (via Notebookcheck ), that’s now happened. That means the DJI Osmo Pocket 4 could go on sale pretty much any day now.
The FCC filing doesn’t tell us very much that’s exciting about the camera – it confirms that it will support Wi-Fi 5, for example, just like the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 – but there will apparently be a battery capacity upgrade: up from 1,300 mAh to 1,545 mAh.
We’ll have to wait and see how much of a difference it makes to actual battery life when we get our hands on the DJI Osmo Pocket 4. Extra battery capacity is always welcome, of course, but it’s only one of the factors that contribute to battery life.
A ban in the US is on the way
We’ve previously seen leaked images of the DJI Osmo Pocket 4, which show a significant redesign. That redesign could apparently include a different screen, which would also impact the average time between battery charges.
In addition to a second screen, the upcoming gimbal device is also rumored to have a second camera. That would theoretically lead to higher quality photos and videos and also a wider range of recording options.
This all comes amid the threat of a ban on new DJI products in the US, which looks increasingly likely on Tuesday, December 23rd. A safety audit by a government agency must take place before that date for DJI to escape a ban.
DJI wants to have the Osmo Pocket 4 launched before December 23rd and the start of the ban – although it’s currently unclear what powers the US government might have to retroactively ban products launched before that date.
