Senior Sindh minister and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader, Sharieel Inam Memon, expressed strong opposition to any channel projects on the Indus River and declared that he would fight such initiatives until his last breath.
With a press conference, Memon declared that the nation must unite to strengthen Pakistan and tackle the challenges it is facing, and calls on the public to put their differences aside on the occasion of Eidul Fitr, Express News reported.
Memon’s statement followed a recent series of terrorist incidents in which innocent civilians were murdered in bus attacks. He praised the victims of the military and security forces and called for continued efforts to protect the nation.
Senior minister repeated PPP’s attitude towards the controversial channel projects and emphasized that the party would require Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to issue a clear statement to stop such initiatives. “We will not allow any channels by the river Indus, and I urge the Prime Minister to announce the cancellation of the projects on April 4,” Memon said.
Memon also aimed at critics and accused some of being influenced by external powers, specifically naming those who allegedly support India’s Raw Intelligence Agency.
He emphasized that meaningful dialogue could only take place with those who really support Pakistan.
As for the importance of media freedom, Memon PPP’s attitude towards pressure rights repeated. “PPP has always worked for journalists’ rights,” he said. “We are obliged to secure freedom of press and will continue to stand firm against any unfair treatment of media personnel.”
In addition, the Memon law on the prevention of electronic crimes (PECA) criticized, while confirming that PPP does not support laws that limit media freedom or allow the spread of fake news.
With internal issues, Memon called for political dialogue in Balochistan while emphasizing that terrorists should be treated.
He ended by emphasizing PPP’s attitude towards human rights and media freedom and claiming the party would continue to fight for these principles.
