Dogecoin may have started as a joke, but this upgrade is not one.
DOGEOS, the application developed by the Mydoge-Watching Book, has submitted a formal proposal to the Dogecoin core, which introduces a new opcode that would enable the network to verify zero-knowledge evidence (ZKPS) naturally.
Developers aim to transform an unused part of the script system into a tool that can verify cryptographic evidence, starting with ‘Groth16’ (a particular type of proof widely used in ZK systems) and enables future upgrades.
This would allow Dogecoin to support more advanced applications outside the chain, such as rollups and smart contracts, while maintaining the head chain’s speed and simplicity.
The procedure is modular according to design as proof systems can be selected and the OPCODE behavior is strictly opt-in. If the proof verifies, the script continues; If not, it fails. Old nodes remain compatible and treat the upback of a no-up. No surprise forks, no World Cup -Business.
“The OP_CHECKZKP proposal marks a major technical step forward for Dogecoin,” the Dogeos team wrote in the proposal. “It extends proof-of-work blockchain from a basic payment system to a platform capable of supporting defi, games, identity and other verifiable on-chain applications.”
Unlike Ethereum’s World Cup model, Dogecoin’s vision is minimal and pragmatic: calculation remains off-chain; Dogecoin just checks the receipts.
“Dogecoin that gets the ability to integrate with ZK L2S is the kind of interoperability we need to build the ecosystem tool,” said Tim Stebbing, director of the Dogecoin Foundation. “It allows L1 to focus on being the fastest, best, most fun blockchain and interconnected agents for all humanity.”
DOGEOS also stated that it developed an EVM-compatible ZKVM-a virtual machine that allows Ethereum-native applications to run directly on Dogecoin infrastructure.
None of this is still coming without trade -offs. Confirmation of a Groth16 certificate takes 10-20ms and you cannot stuff hundreds of evidence in a 1 MB block without running into validation delays.
Therefore, the proposal includes strict limits for one ZKP per Script, five per Block, at least to the start. The move comes as an institutional interest in Doge Riles in the past week, with companies such as Bit Overlay ensuring up to $ 500 million in financing to build a Dogecoin Treasury.
