In an progress for organ transplantation in Pakistan, Dow University Hospital has successfully implemented its 190. Liver transplantation under the guidance of international medical experts. The complex operation involved a 23-year-old donor who delivered a 750-gram part of his liver to his 42-year-old uncle, where both people reported to be in stable state after surgery.
The operation began early on Wednesday and continued until the evening. It was broadcast live from the Dow University Operation Theater to Seminar Hall and streamed through the university’s official site and social media platforms, offering an educational opportunity for a large collection of medical students and trainees.
The procedure was monitored by recognized international surgeons, including Professor John Lamattina, who has previously visited Pakistan; And Professor John Fung, who visited the country for the first time. Both are affiliated with the University of Chicagos Pritzker School of Medicine. The professors gave valuable insights to DOW’s liver transplant team, led by Dr. Jehanzaib Haider, about groundbreaking surgical techniques and global trends in liver transplantation.
Rector at Dow University, Professor Muhammad Saeed Quraishy, congratulated the team with the successful transplant and expressed his appreciation to the visitors international experts. Pro-Vice Chancellor, Professor Dr. Jehan Ara Hassan, who was present during the live session, shared details of the patient’s background. The recipient, a 42-year-old resident of Shahdadkot, had suffered liver failure due to prolonged hepatitis B and D infections. His 23-year-old nephew volunteered to donate 750 grams of his liver and facilitate the successful transplant.
Professor Hassan noted that Dow University with the support of the Sindh government has now completed 190 liver transplants, all delivered at no cost to patients. She also emphasized that the approach to organ donation of the Pakistani society is often shaped by religious and cultural faith. In response, Dow University develops a proposal for an organ donation bank to improve accessibility and attention.
She also announced that Dow University of Health Sciences hosts Pakistan’s first international transplant conference later this week.
