Islamabad:
A sharp reduction of 91,000 CUSERCS in water currents from India into the Chenab River has been observed over the past two days, Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) said on Saturday.
According to the data, the stream of water at the Chenab River’s Marala headwork at 98,200 CUSERCs stood on May 29. However, it dropped drastically to 44,800 CUSERCS one day later.
At Saturday, the inflow threw itself further to only 7,200 CUSERCS, without no water being derived downstream. The low levels marked a total reduction of 91,000 CUSERCS at Marala head works in two days.
However, Pakistan Meteorological Department’s Flood Division Categorized the Water Stream at Marala Barrage as “Normal” and noticed a continued downward trend.
It is relevant to note that this is not the first disturbance this month. On May 5, just before an increase in military tensions between the two neighbors, India had almost stopped water releases in Pakistan from Chenab without issuing any prior notice.
Earlier on Friday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif issued a strong statement and condemned India’s attempt to weapon water.
He warned that Pakistan would not tolerate any violation of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) or any actions in danger of millions of the narrow political agendas.
“Pakistan would not allow Delhi to cross the red line by holding IWT in monkey and danger of millions of lives of narrow political gains,” the prime minister said.
