- Housing Purifier Compact is Dyson’s first desk air cleaner
- It uses a new, star -shaped nozzle inspired by jet engines
- Electrostatic HEPA filter lasts up to 5 years
Dyson is known to make some of the best air purifiers on the market, but they are not very compact. In fact, some of them are even massive (looking at you, Dyson Big+quiet). So when I heard the brand launched its first desk machine ever, I was fascinated.
For the Hushjet Purifier Compact, Dyson had to reconsider his air purification design. The models in the current lineup either use loops/amps (as seen on Purifier Hot+Cool Formaldehyde HP09) or cones (as on the aforementioned Big+Quiet), which are effective but takes up a lot of space. In contrast, the new addition has a space -saving, star -shaped nozzle that works in a completely different way.
The design is inspired by a jet engine – or a hair dryer concentrator -nozzle if you are looking for a more common analogy. The engine is larger than the star noise, so air is compressed as it pushes through. So while it uses the same principle of inclusion (ie to pull air in from the rest of the room and make a more powerful jet) as other dyson cleaners do so in a more compact format.
“The new star -nozzle is exciting because it still introduces without having this hole in the middle,” Dyson Engineer told Sophie Harold me when I visited Dyson Campus to look at the brand’s new launches. “By having the bending edges, it is still encouraging air from the surrounding region to participate in the fast jet. It also means you can have a compact shape when you want something like a desk cleaner, without having an amplifier that may get in the way of your screen.”
All this sounds very impressive, but in reality, when the house was revealed, I was a little disappointed. Although overall it is smaller than Dyson’s other air purifiers, it is not what I would call compact, and it is definitely too big to sit naturally on a desk. If you put it on the floor, it really is the footprint that is relevant and at 9.1in / 23 cm in diameter it is not wildly different from other dyson cleaners. As long as you do not expect any ultra-compact, there are several plus points for this new machine.
Control of the chaos
The new star-shaped nozzle has benefits in terms of acoustics-what means that, despite being inspired by aircraft, it is actually extremely quiet in operation. I listened to it at its lowest frame in a Dyson Lab’s Anchoic Chamber (ie one designed to stop all echoes – it was so quiet that I could hear my own heartbeat) and I could hardly hear it.
“We often look at something called turbulence of flow, and it has to do with how disturbed or chaotic [air]Flow is, “Sophie explained.” Imagine that people waiting to get on a train and try to design a shape on a door, which means they can all come out quietly and peacefully instead of beating each other and causing chaos. So what the star does is, it reduces that chaos. It minimizes the amount of turbulence coming out of the jets, which in turn means that the current itself is quieter, and that is what has allowed us to have the really quiet speed setting. “
The last big upgrade on the house is that it uses an electrostatic HEPA filter, which is more energy efficient than a regular HEPA filter and lasts much longer. In fact, Dyson says this filter can last up to five years before they need replacement – which significantly reduces the ongoing costs of running this cleaner. The system is fully sealed so that everything that is sucked up stays inside.
For those of you who are sold on the new design, I have some bad news: You have some time to wait. The Dyson Househorn Purifier Compact Air Purifier is not scheduled to be sold until early 2026 (that is the date of UK – I am awaiting confirmation of when it is expected to be launched in the US and Australia). Price information is also TBC.
