Eagles’ AJ Brown almost chose baseball over football

AJ Brown’s sixth season in the NFL was probably his most memorable. The All-Pro-wide recipient delivered a third season in a row with 1,000-yard and was an important part of the Philadelphia Eagles’ race for a Super Bowl title.

Before he made jumped to the NFL, Brown ended with just under 3,000 receiving yards with Ole Miss Rebels in his time as a college football star.

While Brown has become one of the best players in his sport, there was a time when he was considering another way.

The three-time pro bowler distinguished himself by football and baseball at Starkville High in Mississippi. He also played in 2015 Under Armor High School All-American Baseball Game.

Brown admitted that he was alarmed by the hard -throwing abilities of Pitchers competing in that game, which led to his decision to pursue football.

“I tell you when I made the decision to play football. I’m in the right field. I’m in the All-American game in Chicago. The first was like 97 (MPH) -97 Off the RIP?

“However, we are still in high school. So these are all high school players and these guys will probably go the first round. I see him throwing an off-speed tone height and it’s like a 90 km / h wrestling ball. I want to see if I can go over here and beat this.”

Brown withdrew interest from MLB teams and San Diego Padres ejected him in one of the later rounds in 2016. However, Brown chose to go to college in his original Mississippi and take the football. Brown won the first team of All-Sec-Heads twice during his prominent career at Ole Miss.

Earlier this month, Padres Area Scout Stephen Moritz remembered, scouting Brown a decade ago and watching his elite athletics.

“You’re never sure,” Moritz told MLB.com. “As scouts are you wrong more often than you are right. But I was as sure as I could be [that] He should be a good outfielder. He would be big in Outfield. There was too much athletics. There was natural ability. You add all his tools together, that was the one thing I was pretty sure of. This guy becomes a good outfielder in the big leagues. “

In 2020, Brown Detailed how baseball helped shape him to the footballer he is today.

“You catch the ball with your eyes,” Brown told ESPN. “Baseball really helped me with it for football. When you track a ball, especially a deep ball, it helped me a lot. I played center field in baseball. On a deep passport in football you judge it and track it just like a center Fielder.”

Tennessee Titans chose Brown in the second round of the NFL draft in 2019 and traded him to Eagles during the 2022 NFL draft.
