ISLAMABAD:

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has disqualified PTI Senator Murad Saeed and issued his delisting, according to an official release.

The ECP stated that Murad Saeed had been sentenced to 10 years in prison by an anti-terrorism court in Rawalpindi. His disqualification has been carried out in accordance with Article 63(1). 1, letter h) of the constitution.

An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Rawalpindi earlier in March delivered a verdict in the May 9 General Headquarters (GHQ) attack case, sentencing 47 alleged perpetrators, including the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), to 10 years in prison each, along with a fine of Rs 500,000. Among the offenders were Murad Saeed along with other top PTI leaders.

According to Article 63(1)(h) of the Constitution of Pakistan, a legislator is disqualified if “he has, on conviction for any offense involving moral turpitude, been sentenced to imprisonment for a term not less than two years, unless a period of five years has elapsed since his release”.

Following the decision, the Senate General seat from Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa has been declared vacant.
