Pakistan is expected to observe Eidul Fitr on March 31, 2025 according to a scientific moonlight forecast released by Suparco.
In a statement, Space & Upper Gave Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) an astronomical analysis of Shawwal Crescent’s visibility, indicating that the moon is likely to be seen on March 30 across the country.
According to Suparco, New Moon for Shawwal 1446 Hijri is formed on March 29 at 1 p.m. 15:58 (Pakistan Standard Time). However, visibility that evening is unlikely to be due to its young age and positioning.
On March 30 (29th Ramadan in Pakistan) the age of the crescent will be about 27 hours, making it easily visible to the naked eye after sunset. Additional astronomical factors, such as the Moon’s 14-degree height at sunset and 2% lighting, further support the likelihood of seeing.
The visibility of the crescent depends on atmospheric conditions, and clear skies would increase the chances of seeing the moon across most regions of Pakistan.
The statement also emphasized that in Saudi Arabia, the chances of moonlight on March 29 remain minimal due to the younger age of the moon and lower height at sunset. This means that the moon is likely to be visible on March 30 in Saudi Arabia, suggesting that Pakistan and much of the Middle East could celebrate Eid the same day – 31. March.
Despite Suparco’s scientific forecast, the final decision on Eid Ul-Fitr will be made by Pakistan’s central Ruet-E-Hilal Committee. The committee will meet on March 30 to evaluate Moon Sighting Reports from all over the country, considering both scientific data and testimony testimony before publishing an official message.
“While scientific models strongly indicate a clear observation on March 30, the final decision remains dependent on earth observations and the Ruet-E-Hilal Committee’s official verdict,” a Suparco spokesman said.
Pakistan follows both scientific and traditional moon vision methods, and the government has often been dependent on Suparco’s moon calculations to help Ruet-E-Hilal Committee’s decision-making.
If the crescent is seen as predicted, Ramadan ends with 29 fasting, and Eid Ul-Fitr is celebrated on Monday, March 31, 2025.
