Empty treasury benches drawing IRE

Lahore:

On Friday, the Punjab Assembly unanimously adopted a decision that congratulated Chief of Army Staff (Coas) General Syed Asim Munir about his height to rank as a field marsh, which praised his leadership in ensuring a remarkable success in the recent conflict with India.

The resolution moved by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) MPA Shaukat Raja praised the armed forces for their strategic expertise and bravery.

It stated that General Munir, through his wisdom and military sharpness, effectively prevented any hostile feature from India and ultimately ensured a decisive victory that reinforced Pakistan’s attitude on the global scene.

Despite the rare consensus across party lines on the decision, the assembly procedure was overshadowed by criticism from the opposition, which threw the government for its visible lack of interest in the session’s legislative business, especially during a general discussion of the provincial’s deteriorating law and order situation.

Opposition leader Ahmad Khan Bhachar strongly criticized the absence of ministers and officials from the Treasury benches, pointing out that only a reigning party MPA was present during the debate while the official gallery remained completely empty.

He expressed concern about rising crime, accused the government of negligence, and failed to make its promises to secure public security.

“Law and order have collapsed. In just two days, 324 and 370 criminal events occurred in Lahore respectively. This proves the seriousness of the situation,” he said, referring to recent police data.

At one point, the panel of chairmen Sami Ullah Khan also expressed dissatisfaction with the non-participation of government officials.
