- Ex-blizzard chief Mike Yarra has commented on the recent release of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered
- The former president says that remasters cannot hold up against “modern masterpieces” as Elden Ring
- He adds, “we’ve had so many ‘remasters’ that nostalgia is limited”
Former Blizzard Entertainment -President Mike Ybarra said he is “skeptical” over remasters as The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remasteredcompare the game with success with Elden RingAs he argued, the bar has moved too high for role -playing (RPGs).
In a recent post on X / Twitter (VIA PC GAMER) shared the ex-blizzard boss his thoughts on Oblivion Remaster and says he doesn’t think remasters of old games can hold up against “modern masterpieces” as from software’s Elden Ring.
“I’m skeptical of 20-year-old remasters,” Ybarra said. “What was once amazing, now remastered, will never hold up against modern masterpieces such as Elden Ring. The bar is simply moved from the Safe Open World RPGs to what Elden Ring brought us all.
“I would very much like to have proven wrong. But I am not,” he continued.
“I don’t mean souls, I mean the discovery, classes, combat system, etc.” Added yarra. “Just a new level of quality.”
When another user said that remasters like Oblivion “Lack of Innovation” and compensates in nostalgia, replied yarra and said he thinks players want something new.
“I hear you, but I think we’ve had so many ‘remaster’ that nostalgia is limited. I could have wrong. But I think the game community wants fresh and new more than ever,” he said.
Despite Yarra’s comments, it is clear that there is room for both remaster and modern RPGs like Elden Ring and Assassin’s Creed: Shadows. Just hours after shade drop launch of Oblivion RemasteredThe game quickly got over 180,000 contemporary players at Steam.
From writing, the game has reached a top of the highest player of 216,784 players, according to Steamdb, and has a total user rating of “very positive” on the platform.
