Former NFL judge Terry McAulay was unhappy with how college soccer referees took advantage of the new injury rule in Georgia Tech’s victory over Colorado on Friday night.
McAulay pointed to a decisive decision by 2:34 back in the fourth quarter. The yellow jackets and buffaloes were tied to 20 pieces. A Georgia Tech player went down with an injury and medical staff came out onto the field to check him. However, Georgia Tech was indicted one of their three timeouts due to stops in the game.

NCAA made it a point to knock down on players false injuries. If a player on the field presents as the wound after the ball is discovered for the next spectacle, the player’s team will be charged a timeout. If the team has no timeouts left, a 5-yard delay of the game penalty would be assessed to the team.
In this case, McAulay disagreed with the BIG 12 Conference officials.
“The big 12 doubles down on being ridiculous about official with regard to the new injury rule. Again, this player was clearly wounded at the end of the play, and yet the offense was still accused of,” he wrote on X.

“What makes it worse can repeated official communicating to the field about the time of the injury and somehow failed to note that it was good before the ball was discovered.”
McAulay did the same point during last weekend’s match between Kansas State and Iowa State.
“We already have an example of why I expressed concern that this rule would unfairly punish a team that did nothing wrong. This player is obviously injured, and yet because he went down after the ball was discovered, they were accused of a timeout,” he wrote. “Even worse, he seems to be demonstrating that he was injured before the ball was discovered.
“This is not a good rule.”
Georgia Tech won the game, 27-20.

The NCAA Football Rules Committee aimed at players celebrating injuries to stop the game. In addition, a player should sit out a game, even if the team gets a timeout and may not return until a medical professional approves it.
