Customs Judge Waqar Ahmad Sidhu on Saturday awarded a two-day physical custody of the former CEO of Rawalpindi District Education Authority Amanullah Cheena and Clerk Arshad Mehmood in a corruption case involving RS36.58 million. Both were presented to the court after their arrest of anti-corruption establishment (ACE). The court rejected the ACE investment team’s request for a seven-day custody and ordered the suspects to be presented again on June 25 after the end of the first interrogation. According to FIR, the defendant financial losses caused the national tax through alleged corruption in the purchase of furniture, stationery and IT equipment. Orders were issued to two companies-M/S Malik traders and M/S Kamran Enterprises-there were paid fully, but underconated the contracted goods. Details of FIR claimed that RS2.5 million was paid for stationery, RS2.88 million for furniture, and RS2.68 million were paid for IT equipment. Anti corruption prosecutor claimed RS1.74 million furniture worth, and RS1.91 million worth of IT products were not delivered. Defense attorneys opposed the item and said the supplies were delivered in stages and that no corruption had occurred. They called the case politically motivated and claimed that Amanullah Cheena, a Class-19 officer, was arrested even before FIR was registered 18 hours after his detention. They argued that instead of physical custody, the defendant should be sent to prison for judicial decision and claimed their full cooperation with the investigation. Meanwhile, the investigation has been expanded to include eight other educational officials and two presidents of the All Pakistan Clerks Association (APCA), which has received a call with a warning of arrest in the event of non -compliance. These convened include Deputy Deneral Education Manager Muhammad Nabeel Naqvi, Dr. Yellow Ahmed and Habibullah; Senior Rectors Muhammad Asif and Muhammad Sajjad; Admin Officer Muhammad Irfan; Administrator of the Government Hudaibiya Education Complex; Legal Officer Kamran Saeed; and APCA presidents Raja Aftab and Irshad Ahmed. The issuance of a large number of subpoenas has reportedly caused unrest within the education department, which prompted many officials to seek political support. According to the ACE team, all officials have refused to testify against Amanullah Cheena or become an approval.
