Karachi:
Police have settled a criminal network involved in a recent wave of extortion cases over the metropolis. A suspect was killed in a meeting while several others have been arrested.
Police intensify the efforts to catch the remaining key suspects, including a suspect for whom a red message has been issued.
According to SSP Siu Muhammad Shoaib Memon, extortion -related crimes in New Karachi from March this year escalated. Criminals targeted local businesses and residents and demanded money through threatening slides and whatsApp calls. Those who opposed or delayed payments faced violent retribution, including armed attacks on their stores, housing and jobs.
Over the last 10 days of Ramazan, a citizen, Abdul Jabbar, was deadly shot at a charity Dastarkhwan.
On July 16, a rickshaw driver was killed and six others wounded in Surjani town in another extortion-related shooting.
The special Investigation Unit (SIU) launched a targeted operation to run the extortion network. Studies revealed that Wasiullah Lakho, operating from Iran, orchestrated the gang’s activities through Abdul Samad Kathiawari.
