- Windows 11 24h2 could not be installed by the users of some wallpaper adaptation apps
- This was due to compatibility issues with said apps and 24h2
- Microsoft has now solved these problems, mostly anyway
Microsoft has finally lifted a compatibility block that prevents some Windows 11 users from upgrading to the latest version of us because they had certain third-party wallpaper apps installed.
These are apps that allow you to install custom wallpaper on your Windows 11 machine, and the applications in question did not play well with Windows 11 24h2 that misbreaks in different ways. It included causing errors, faults with wallpaper yourself, disappearing desktopicons or even problems with virtual desktops.
Windows Central noted that Microsoft has now marked these problems as fixed in a Windows 11 release of health status update. So those with the said wallpaper apps are okay to go ahead and install the 24H2 update.
Well, in theory anyway, even if there are some warnings here that I come to the next.
You remember that this compatibility block was put in place right when 24h2 first came out, at the end of September last year, so it has taken quite a long time to smooth over these problems – and there is a reason for it too.
Analysis: Easy complications
As noted, there are some catches here that Microsoft tells us in his release dog dashboard update.
For starters, the compatibility block is only gradually removed, so you may be waiting a little longer, depending on your PC configuration and the exact app you have installed.
Microsoft explains: “Note that several wallpaper applications are currently included in this compatibility. For this reason, the specific timing of the resolution of this problem on a given device depends on the application used and the time of this application update. When new versions and updates are released to these applications of their respective developers, these problems are expected.”
Therefore, the long wait for the dissolution of this affair, as it seems that Microsoft is not tinking with Windows 11 24h2 even to make these apps work, or at least did not do much in the way of it. Rather, it apparently waited for the individual app developers to do their software well with 24h2 themselves.
Microsoft also notes that when you fire up the Windows 11 24H2 installation process, you may be able to see a message that tells you how to uninstall a wallpaper app. You are advised to either do this – and just dump the wallpaper for now – or try to update the app, which mentioned prompt may have appeared because you are running an older version of the program.
In other words, updating of the wallpaper app and trying to install Windows 11 24h2 again can work – but if not, you should probably remove the application.
Windows 11 24H2 has a history of problems with third -party customization software that goes back well before release, deep in its test phase as some popular tools were banned (for chagrin for some Windows Insiders). Because 24h2 is built on a brand new underlying platform, Germanium, this has created much more problems than any other update to Windows 11 so far.
And while such a big shift could be expected to be a headache and trigger more bugs than usual, the amount we have witnessed has essentially been a minor avalanche and a markedly unpleasant experience for some Windows 11 users.
