Jamiat Disadvantaged In-E-Islam (Jui-F) Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has renewed his call for fresh elections in Pakistan, which describes February 8, 2024, the parliamentary elections as “rigged.”
His comments came after participating in a dinner hosted by Pakistan Tehreek-E-Insaf (PTI) senior leader and former National Assembly’s speeches Asad Qaiser on Tuesday. Dinner gathered leaders from various opposition parties, including the Awaam Pakistan Party leader Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.
In a speech with the media after the collection, Rehman repeated his demand for the Pakistani Muslim League-Nawaz-led (PML-N) government to resign and advertise new choices.
He also raised concerns about the expired period of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja, whose five -year duration ended on January 26.
While the government adopted the 26th constitutional amendment to extend Raja’s term of office until a new CEC is appointed, he emphasized that consultation was needed in this case.
Rehman emphasized that the current government no longer represented the population of Pakistan. His comments were in line with the emotions expressed by Abbasi that emphasized the need for joint efforts to protect constitutional rights.
Abbasi also confirmed that opposition parties had reached a consensus during the meeting to demand fresh elections and the release of political prisoners.
The leaders also called for ending to end what they called “fascism” in the country, and emphasized the importance of a government that really reflects people’s will.
Earlier in the day, Abbasi had met Rehman at his residence to discuss the ongoing political development in the country.
The overall position of the opposition to the current government and their demands for new elections are likely to add pressure to the ruling authorities as the vote in February is approaching.
