A transidentifying athlete won a woman’s bicycle event that was officially sanctioned by US cycling on Tuesday, causing female opponents to protest and speak.
The Trans athlete, Kate Phillips, won first place at Lyon’s Masters National Championships in Wisconsin on Tuesday. Phillips beat Veteran -Women’s Cyclist Julie Peterson for the gold, and Peterson then refused to take the podium at the medal ceremony in protest.
“You could clearly see the power he had,” Peterson told Pakinomist Digital about Phillips.

Peterson said she wasn’t even aware that Phillips had registered for the event until she had already registered herself and even argued with officials about the situation.
“If I had known, I wouldn’t have spent thousands of dollars in travel and leisure to come and make a race,” Peterson said.
“I said, ‘I don’t want to drive against a man,’ and they quickly quarreled me and said ‘oh, you can’t call him a man,’ and I’m like ‘yes, he’s a man’, so I quickly got shot and corrected it’s a woman and I don’t even know what to say.”
Veteran -Women’s Cyclist Debbie Milne competed in the Tuesday event and finished in seventh place. Milne also spoke against the US Cycling to allow Phillips to compete.
“To be fair to all people, if we want to tell him or her, he was born a biological man, that is a fact,” Milne told Pakinomist Digital. “And that’s what makes it an unreasonable advantage. Whatever has happened after that is a completely different topic.
“I have been running for 25 years under conditions that only women can understand. There is much that only a born female woman goes through because of the cycles we have. Even it alone is something that a male -born biological man can never experience. There is nothing that can stimulate it when you show up for the race and you are at the worst point of the monthly cycle and you know you are in a uneven.”
Milne also said she was not aware of the trans athlete’s participation prior to the race.

“I totally didn’t expect this to run 13 hours, come and make a national championship,” Milne said. “I had no idea I would have liked to know that was what the expressions were if I came. But it wasn’t even made to know me.”
Fellow Veteran Women’s Cyclist Kristina Gray, who did not compete against Phillips on Tuesday, wanted to speak to support her female comrades because she said she also had to compete against trans athletes in cycling as a native from Oregon.
“I have in my last 10 years of racing, I have had to drive against biological men, I have been forced to be on the podium with many of them, recently for the past five years,” Gray said. “In Oregon, every almost weekend, there is a biological man in our race, every weekend, practically.”
The three women then reached out to the Independent Council for Women’s Sports (Icons) to spread the attention of the incident.
Pakinomist Digital has reached the US Cycling and Phillips for comment.
