The federal government has removed the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Director General Ahmed Ishaque Jehangir and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Inspector of Police Akhtar Hayat, quoting administrative failures, confirmed officials on Monday.
Jehangir has been awarded as an officer at Special Duty (OSD) in the establishment department, Express News reported.
His removal comes in the midst of growing concerns about human trafficking with sources that connect the decision to FIA’s slow reaction to wandering boat tragedies.
Pakistan has witnessed several deadly migratory events in recent months, including the capsule of a boat off the Moroccan coast earlier this month, killing at least 50 people, most of them Pakistanis.
The FIA has been criticized for his handling of such cases, with reports suggesting that the Prime Minister approved Jehangir’s dismissal due to the slow pace of investigation.
Meanwhile, the government has also removed KP police chief Akhtar Hayat and appointed Zulfiqar Hameed in his place.
Officials quoted the deteriorating security situation in the province, especially rising violence in Kurram and the law enforcement’s failure to maintain order.
Hayat had also directed police officers in November 2024 to refrain from participating in political activities in the middle of Pakistan Tehreek-E-Insaf (PTI) protests.
His removal follows months of federal criticism of KP’s handling of law and order.
The establishment department has begun shortlisting candidates for the new FIA manager, while a formal review confirming HAMED’s appointment as KP IG has been issued.
