Two back-to-back shooting events disturbed the fragile peace in Kurram on Friday and worsened the challenges facing local residents that have already endured four months of road closures and a lack of food and medical supplies, according to officials and tribal elders.
The ulod began when individuals who worked in a field in the Bushra area of Upper Kurram were fired by a rival group. Two people, Yellow Ali Turi and Abbas Ali, were injured in the attack and led to District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital in Parachinar.
After the shooting, an exchange of firearms broke out between the rival groups where both sides using heavy automatic weapons. Officials quickly intervened, mediation of a ceasefire and deployment of police and other staff to prevent further escalation.
However, during the implementation process, according to tribal leader Shafiq Turi, another shooting event occurred in which five persons persistent gunshot wounds. The wounded included Kurram Assistant Commissioner (AC) Saeed Manan who had gone there to control the situation.
Manan was rushed to the DHQ Hospital, where he underwent immediate surgery. The Medical Superintendent Dr. Syed Mir Hassan Jan said Manan was shot in the stomach, so the operation was necessary. He added that after surgery, Manan was lifted to Peshawar via a helicopter.
Later in the day, a Jirga of the rival parties in Kohat, along with Grand Aman Jirga, summoned ways to establish permanent peace in the district. Jirga decided to form committees that included representatives of the rival parties to implement the peace agreement signed earlier in January.
