Hyderabad:
The rain-triggered flood that cuts a weak through Punjab can soon expand its destruction to Sindh, which potentially affect hundreds of thousands living in the province’s river areas. Senior Sindh minister Sharjeel Inam Memon warned on Saturday that 1.65 million people residing in 15 districts in Sindh are possibly affected by the rising waters.
In a speech with the media in Karachi, Detailed Sharjeel detailed that 1,651 villages spread over 167 union committees and trade union councils and home to approximately 273,000 families, facing the threat of flooding. He also warned that about 102 points along thousands of kilometers of the Indus flood vans showed structural weaknesses during previous major floods in 2010 and 2015.
To keep residents informed, the provincial government’s rain and flood cell has been activated. Available via four landline numbers, the cell will provide flooding updates every three hours. Sharjeel urged the media to rely on this official source for accurate and timely information about the evolving situation.
SHARJEEL, who deals with concern about moving people living on the riverbed, said most residents prefer to stay with relatives rather than move to relief. “The inhabitants of the Catcha areas are well aware of when to evacuate in the light of impending floods,” he explained. Nevertheless, the provincial government is proactively establishing emergency camps based on an estimated number of displaced persons in each district. In addition, 300 camps for livestock across Sindh are created to protect animals during the crisis.
Sharjeel also emphasized that Pakistan Peoples Party President Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah monitors the situation closely and actively issue directives to ensure a coordinated reaction.
Flooding update
Irrigation Authorities registered 364,573 CuseC’s water flow at Guddu Barrage, 256,660 CUSSCS at SUKKUR and 265,328 CUSSCS at KOTRI on Saturday. Currently, flooding status at all three rods remains low. Guddu Barrage can withstand up to 1.2 million CUSSCS, SUKKUR UP TO 960,000 CUSSCS AND KOTRI UP TO 870,000 CUSSCS.
During the devastating floods of 2010, Kotri Barrage successfully passed between one million to 1.2 million cuses of flood water without structural damage or waste from its life. Meanwhile, the Indus River has begun to regain its country, locally known as Katcha. Residents of hundreds of villages in the divisions of Larkana, Sukkur and Hyderabad began to evacuate their home for security on Saturday.
Floodwaters also reached the Torhi Dam, a place whose violation in 2010 caused floods that affected almost half of Sindh province after a 15-year hole. Separately, residents of Larkana have raised concern about weak spots that develop on Moria Loop bottom, and criticized irrigation authorities for not reinforcing Dyke so far.

The population of Jamshoro claimed that over 50 villages have gone so far underwater, but the district administration set the figure of the villages, which will be immersed at 28.
