In the 2019 horror film directed by Ari Aster, Florence played Dani – a character who suffers from extreme family trauma and later witnesses a series of heinous murders.

“The character is in such a terrible state in her life, and she’s constantly on the verge of a panic attack,” the 29-year-old actress told Louis Theroux on his The Louis Theroux Podcast, before adding that she herself had “never ever been through anything close to that.”

Having led a comfortable life before making the film, she explained that the experience of putting herself “through hell” left her traumatized.

“I had really put myself through it,” she recalled.

“In the beginning, I just imagined hearing the news that one of my siblings had died. And then towards the middle of filming, it was like, oh no, I actually needed to imagine the caskets. And then towards the end of filming, I was actually going to my whole family’s funeral,” he said. Black Widow said star.

On a flight home after leaving the film’s European set, Florence said she had broken down in tears and felt guilty about leaving Dani to “figure out how she coped with the rest of her life”, which she realized was an attempt to soothe her own emotional turmoil.

“My brain obviously felt sorry for myself because I had abused myself and really manipulated my own emotions to get a performance,” Florence Pugh explained, before concluding with the statement: “I just can’t exhaust myself like that because it has a knock-on effect. I think it made me sad for like half a year after that.”
