The United Nations:
UN Secretary -General Antonio Guterres has expressed grief over devastating floods in Pakistan, which has killed hundreds of people and displaced over a million.
“The Secretary -General is deeply saddened by the recent floods in northern Pakistan, which has reportedly claimed more than 400 lives,” his spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a statement.
The disaster caused by a “serious monsoon that worsens by climate change” has affected about 1.5 million people, which has left hundreds of thousands in need of humanitarian help, according to the statement.
It also noted that “more than 3,000 homes, over 400 schools and about 40 health facilities have been damaged.”
The UN chief praised Pakistan’s response effort and added that he “praises Pakistani authorities for moving more than a million people in Punjab.”
He also “expresses his solidarity with the government and people in Pakistan, expanding his inner compassion to the families to those who have lost their lives and want a quick improvement to those who have been injured.”
The statement said that the UN and its partners “work closely with Pakistani authorities to quickly assess the humanitarian effect of the floods, identify needs and accommodate gaps in the answer.”
It added that “Emergency Relief Coordinator, Tom Fletcher, has released $ 600,000 from the regional humanitarian total fund in support of relief and restoration efforts, and discussions are underway with the government about a response plan.”
