In the midst of escalating regional tensions following Israeli attacks on Iranian military and nuclear facilities, Pakistan on Friday advised its citizens to avoid non-essential trips to Iran and Iraq, especially for religious pilgrimage.

“Given the evolving security situation in the region, Pilgrims from Pakistan are advised to reconsider their travel plans to Iran and Iraq,” the Foreign Office said in a statement.

The counseling comes in the wake of Israeli attacks on Iranian territory early Friday, targeting military and nuclear places of high value. The attacks resulted in the death of several senior Iranian military commands and nuclear scientists and raised fears of a wider regional conflict.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif instructed all relevant government departments to extend full support to Pakistani citizens and pilgrims currently in Iran. He called for coordinated efforts to secure their security and facilitate their safe return to Pakistan.

To respond to the new situation, the Foreign Ministry has set up a crisis management cell to provide relief to Pakistani nationals abroad.

The Pakistani Embassy in Tehran has also been asked to remain in close contact with members of the community and Zairen (pilgrims) and to offer all necessary relief. The embassy has issued a dedicated emergency hotline: (+98) 2166941388.

The government continues to monitor the situation closely and has assured that, if necessary, further steps will take further steps to protect citizens’ interests abroad.
