There is no shortage of small digital microphones designed for content creators on the market, and the Insta360 has just entered the crisis with its first wireless microphone ever: Insta360 MIC Air.
The MIC air transmitter (or TX) is a coin size that can be cut to a collar, attached to a shirt with a magnetic clamp or even worn as a pendant. It comes with a windshield to help cut unwanted exterior noise plus built -in noise reduction technology. It offers 10-hour battery life and a 300 m wireless range.
Here’s what’s really neat-MIC AIR supports 48 kHz/24-bit audio via a direct wireless connection with two of the Insta360’s action cameras: Insta360 X5 and Insta360 ACE PRO 2. A direct wireless connection between the transmitter does away with the need for a recipient (RX) and is something that DJI’s MIC Mini can do with DJI products.
However, if you mix marks, you lose the direct wireless connection and need a recipient instead. As such, it makes practical sense to feel your action cam and wireless microphone, so if you are an X5 or ACE Pro 2 user, the new MIC Air makes the most sense. Additional MIC air-compatible models will soon follow, according to Insta360.
MIC AIR can also be purchased in an RX (receiver) and TX (transmitter) bundle. The RX device can be connected to smartphones, the Insta360s Flow Gimbals and other devices, expanding range of compatible hardware.
Already available for ordering
Designed to compete with them like DJI Mic Mini, Rode Wireless Micro and Boya Mini, Insta360 MIC Air is compact, lightweight (TX transmitter is only 7.9 g) and affordable: It is now available at Amazon US and Amazon UK, priced at only $ 49.99 / £ 49.99 / AU $ 89.99 for a Single TX and $ 69,999999999999999 £ 69.99 / AU $ 116.99 for RX and TX -bundle and for the same price in the Insta360 store.
It’s about the same as the equivalent DJI MIC Mini bundle, although interesting Insta360 has decided to sell a more complete package, such as two TX devices, one RX and a charging case -at least for now. These all-in-one packages that you can buy DJI’s MIC Mini offer much more battery life thanks to the charging case plus another TX for two-person audio recording. Apparently, these two areas where the Insta360 is obviously happy to admit the floor to rivals such as DJI and Rode.

While Mic Air is a pretty straightforward and even obvious addition to the Insta360 product lineup, it’s also a sign that the company’s ambitions seem to be growing. Just as DJI was once mainly known for its drones, but now also manufactures action cameras, gimbales, microphones, portable power plants, electric bikes and even, apparently a robotic vacuum cleaner, the Insta360 gradually increases and diversifies its line-up.
It also means that the Insta360 X5 (and ACE Pro 2) users looking for a wireless microphone to level their sound can remain on fire, rather than pair the 360 camera with a microphone from a rival fire, such as DJI, which feels like a blatant feature on the part of the Insta360. In fact, the microphone will be available with the X5 in an Ultimate Creator Bundle, for $ 669 / £ 669 (Australia Price TBC).
A review of Mic Air is on our way from Insta360, so look for a full, in -depth review soon. We are eager to see how it sets up against the DJI MIC MINI, which is largely considered the current market leader of ultra-compact affordable microphones.
