Foundation Actor Jared Harris has opened to the huge, yet “satisfactory” decision that Hari Seldon makes in season 3’s second episode.
In a speech with Techradar, Harris admitted that the crucial choice made by one of his characters in Foundation Season 3 Section 2, aka ‘Shadows in the Math’, was to happen so that Hari and Gaal could “move on” from teacher student dynamics that have defined them since Apple TV original’s first post ever.
Full spoilers immediately follow for this season’s second chapter. Return if you haven’t seen it yet.
‘Shadows in the Math’ sees Hari Renege on Gaal’s plan for the couple to come in and leave Cryosleep for a few weeks each year to prepare the Ignis-based second foundation’s population for the arrival of the mule.
A few years after this plan, you realize that they are running out of time to give mentalism – people who possess mental and telepathic abilities – with the necessary tools to defeat Foundation Season 3’s primary villain. It is at this point that Hari reveals that he stops entering Cryosleep to accelerate the mentalism’s understanding of psycho history and ensure that they are ready for the fight to come.
Despite having promised to continue to wake Gaal annually, Hari leaves her in Kryosleep for the next 146 years. When Gaal has finally woken again, 152 years have passed since Foundation Season 2 ended, and while the other foundation is far more prepared than would have been to try to stop the mule, Hari is now a fragile, old man.

After a deep reunion, Hari again gives a promise to Gaal: This time he will still be around to see her the next day. Later that night he is greeted by Kalle, including the person who previously resurrected Hari through mysterious means of a planet called Oona’s world in Foundation Season 2 section 3 .. Remember, in Foundation Season 1 Section 2 was murdered by his adopted son Raych, who we learn was part of Haris Grand Plan later in Apple TV+ Show’s second season.
Long story short, Kalle Hari says his race has been run. A little reluctant to travel, but also accept his fate, Hari steps through a portal to Oona’s world with Kalle and not seen again.
The insinuation, of course, is that Hari has died for the second time. Harris’ time at one of the best Apple TV+ exhibitions is not over – in fact he also plays Doctor Seldon, a digital version of Hari’s consciousness that permanently exists in the vault.
Nevertheless, Harris explained why ‘Shadows in the Math’ was the right time for Hari to go aside and let Gaal take the reins, though he stopped saying if we ever wanted to see Hari in future installments.
“There wasn’t a discussion [about Hari seemingly dying again]”Harris told me.” I felt that they [Foundation‘s writing team] Did not know what to do with Hari and Gaal’s relationship, and it became a tired, regurgitation of similar things from previous seasons.
“Personally, I would see that the relationship should move on,” Harris continued. “One of the changes made in that episode was that it [Hari walking away] Was a decision he and Gaal took together, rather than one he secretly took to blind her.
“As a consumer of this show, I also felt more satisfied that Gaal’s story line was no longer defined by her relationship with my character. She fully inhabits her story – and this is her story because she is the narrator of this show right from the beginning. So it is important that Hari goes on from this and Gaal discovers her own agency and has not been withheld by anyone else.”

Jared Harris, Foundation Actor
It is not to say that if this is the end of the line of Hari Seldon, Harris will not miss making this version of the character.
“I found that version [Hari] Far more interesting to play because he is human, “added Harris.” The other [Doctor Seldon] Is this digitized consciousness that allows for some cheating in the storytelling because he knows everything, so it wasn’t interesting to play.
“But what’s interesting about Doctor Seldon, and this is something the authors adjusted after talking to them in season two is that Doctor Seldon discovers that his consciousness has been edited. It is a pretty significant thing for him because he always thought he wrote his own story and knew everything, but he is actually just a prayer in another. explore. “
