The German double Olympic shipmaster Laura Dahlmeier has died after a mountaineering accident in Pakistan, her leadership confirmed on Wednesday.

The accident occurred around noon on Monday at an altitude of about 5,700 meters at Laila Peak, the Alpine Club of Pakistan said Tuesday.

Dahlmeier climbed with her mountaineering partner when she was hit by a sudden Rockfall in the Hushhe Valley, part of the northern Gilgit Baltist region. Poor weather conditions prevented a rescue helicopter from reaching the place.

“Laura Dahlmeier died on July 28 in a mountain accident at Laila Peak (6,069 meters) in Pakistan’s Karakoram -series Die Welt newspaper.

“A recovery operation was launched, but eventually interrupted on the evening of July 29.”

The 31-year-old Dahlmeier withdrew from Giathlon in 2019, 25 years, a year after he became the first female skiing to achieve a sprint and persecution at the same Olympics.

The German Olympic Sports Federation expressed deep grief over the news.

“She was more than an Olympic champion – she was someone with heart, attitude and vision,” states a statement of X.

Dahlmeier, who was born in the Bavarian Skiing Garmisch-Partenkirchen, was also honored by the prime minister of her home state, Markus Soeder.

“Laura Dahlmeier marked her original Bavaria in the best sense of the word: She was ambitious and successful, but always remained humble and close to her homeland,” he said in a statement.

“Even after her active career, she shared her love for sports as a winter sports expert, Member of Mountain Rescue Service and Ski Guide.”
