- The first major Star Trek Lego set
- That’s 3,600 pieces
- A full set of characters and some surprises
Fans of the nearly 60-year-old franchise have been waiting decades for this: a Lego Icons set based on part of the iconic sci-fi series, and now we have it, a 3,600-piece, 10.5 in high by 23.5 in. long and 18.5 in wide, buildable figure of Star Trek: The Next Generation. USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D starship, an icon in the long-running series and movies that followed.
The arrival of the Enterprise comes just months after Lego and Paramount, who own the franchise, finally teamed up to begin delivering what is sure to be a series of incredible Star Trek-based sets. Prior to this, buildable, block-based kits for the sci-fi franchise have primarily been handled by companies such as Mega Blocks. They were fine, but never captured the cachet, design expertise or sheer cheekiness of a Lego set.
Within the confines of the largely square, rectangular and triangular building blocks, Lego Icons USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D is a striking replica of the ship from Star Trek: The Next Generationseries that arguably relaunched the franchise for a new, uh, generation in 1987. The ship has a removable command dish, the nacelles with all the right colors and details, and a secondary hull. The shuttle bay opens to reveal two mini shuttle pods.
When you’re done building, you’ll have all the key figures in Lego form. This of course includes Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Commander William Riker, Lieutenant Worf, Lieutenant Commander Data, Dr. Beverly Crusher, Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge, Counselor Deanna Troi, Bartender Guinan and Wesley Crusher. They even bring their own accessories, including phasers, tricorders and a tech case.
The set is designed for adults aged 18 and over and of course includes a display stand. It will ship on November 28th and retail for $399.99. / £349.99 / €379.99.
Lego is planning a splashy Black Friday launch video that will include a guest appearance by Number One and frequent Star Trek director Jonathan Frakes, who signed a USS Enterprise NCC 1701-D set that one lucky viewer or fan will have a chance to win.
Lego is adding a few more Dilithium crystals to the whole affair, offering anyone who orders the starship between November 28 and December 1 a free Lego Icons Star Trek: Type-15 Shuttlepod.
This pod is a real Lego set in its own right with 261 pieces, opening wing doors and a rear hatch. Perhaps best of all, it will include a minifigure of Ensign Ro Laren, a character who featured prominently in a few memorable episodes of the TNG series and even returned in Season 3 of Picard.
For Star Trek fans, this is like the start of a new mission (maybe five years, depending on how long it takes you to build the Enterprise). There will be this and other models, maybe even one of the original 1960s series Enterprise and all its characters. There could be models for the space station from Deep Space 9 or the sleek Enterprise from the Enterprise series from the early aughts. Maybe some vehicles from the JJ Abrams movies? The galaxy is the limit.
Who knows where Lego will boldly go next? Whatever it is, sign us up, Captain, we’re ready to engage.
