San Francisco Giants fired Veteranchef Bob Melvin one day after the regular season 2025 ended.

Melvin’s Option 2026 was picked up in July, but Giants chose to move in a different direction.

San Francisco ended 81-81 this year and hovered on the edge of the playoff battle. Despite a 13-3 increase in August, the club wavered in September and slipped out of the race.

“After careful evaluation, we decided that making a change in leadership was in the team’s best interest,” said Buster Posey, Giants’ President of Baseball Operations, Monday via ESPN. “The last few months have been both disappointing and frustrating for all of us, and we did not appear to our standards. We are now turning our focus on identifying a new leader to guide us ahead.

“Just looking to find another voice that can take us in a different direction.”

Melvin acknowledged after San Francisco’s season ending 4-0 win that he had no insurance policies to return, despite his opportunity being exercised.

Giants are expected to move quickly to secure a new manager. A rumored candidate is Bruce Bochy, Posey’s former skipper in San Francisco, who just finished three seasons with Texas Rangers.

“We talked a lot about it what the standards are for Giants and we have high standards,” Posey said. “And I stick to the same standards. I fully understand the attitude I am in now. My job and the team’s success is also evaluated accordingly. No doubt you hope there can be consistency in these leadership positions. We have to get back to a place where we get in the final game, we make a run in the final game. That’s what our fanbase deserves,

Posey refused to put a timeline on the rent. “I want to make sure to get it right,” he said.

Melvin’s extensive resume means he could land elsewhere. A three-time manager for the year in both leagues, he has a career record of 1,678-1,588 in 22 seasons with Arizona Diamondbacks, Seattle Mariners, Oakland Athletics, San Diego Padres and Giants.

He went 161-163 for two seasons with San Francisco.

“I feel very grateful that I get to play for him and he is the same guy every day,” said third Baseman Matt Chapman. “He has been steady for us, he is always honest with the players, he has our back. He has done the best with what we have given him. The players, many of us did not play for probably our abilities.”
