Victor Perez’s time at the notorious challenging Oakmont golf course turned out to be memorable on Friday. The French golfer mapped a rare ESS during the second round competition at the US Open.

It was just the second hollow-in on a record in an American open on Pennsylvania’s Oakmont Country Club. Perez Aced on par-3 sixth hole Friday using a 7-iron to hit the shot from 192 yards.

The ball jumped a few times before eventually rolling about three meters into the cup.

An animated Perez lifted his arms before giving his caddy a chest skin. Perez also celebrated with his gaming partners, Adam Schenk and Jacob Bridgeman, as spectators welcomed.

Perez admitted that nails an ace are not based solely on skill.

“Obviously, a hole-in-one is taking a little luck,” Perez said. “Honestly, I tried to hit something maybe 15-20 feet past the hole. Maybe it spun it a little more and jumped in. I was a little lucky, which I will definitely take.”

According to Perez, it was the ninth ace in his career. He said he made two in the Bahamas – at his home course – but no one could confirm it because he was playing alone at the time.

“They didn’t believe me at home because I was playing alone,” Perez said. “Now they know.”

The last known ESS, when Oakmont hosted a US Open, happened in 1983. Scott Simpson mapped an ace that year on the 16th hole in the first round.

Ace helped Perez recover after a tough second round start. He finished the second round in a draw for sixth place in 1-over.

Sam Burns ended the day at the top of the leaderboard of 3 below. Burns finished last year’s US Open in a draw for ninth place.
