- Google says new nesting units are in the pipeline
- We can expect gadgets “in the coming months and years”
- Two older hardware is disconnected
If you got the impression that Google’s focus on pixel phones and AI models meant the company ignored its nest smart home kit, think again: Google says “more useful home units” is on the way “in the coming months and years”.
This promise of future hardware was given in a blog post (via 9to5Google), which also announced that the nest protects smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector, and the Nest X Yale Lock Smart Lock was interrupted.
It is perhaps no surprise that it is the end of the line of these two pieces of hardware that has not been updated in several years – but it seems that Google remains engaged in smart home units and to the nest in general.
The blog post points to the Google TV streamer and 4th-gene-nest thermostat (both launched last August) as evidence that it is still interested in home hardware, although there have not been a large number of launches in recent times.
New nests
In addition to the streaming box and the smart thermostat, the current nesting interval of devices covers safety cameras, video dresses, smart speakers and smart screens. Sounds like at least some of these gadgets could be updated this year.
We know that Google is busy swapping Google Assistant to Google Gemini on its devices and in its software, so it seems to be a good reason to push out some updated nest speakers and screens.
New models are definitely due: The latest smart speaker we had was Nest Audio, launched in September 2020, while the latest smart display to arrive was the 2nd Gen-Reden Hub that debuted in March 2021.
Amazon is busy upgrading Alexa to her smart home hardware, which may be pushing Google into action -and there are even reports that Echo speakers and screens could be rescheduled as Alexa devices in the near future.
