- Non -Published Code suggests that Google can allow users to add cards to Google Wallet by pressing the card on their phone
- We do not yet have a time frame or release date
- The new feature could speed up adding new cards to your phone
Google could be ready for a change of Google Wallet app that would add contactless payment cards faster and easier.
Non-released code uncovered by Android Authority suggests that Google could soon activate the addition of maps via almost field communication or NFC, the wireless technology that enables contactless payments.
In everyday life it would mean adding a card by pressing the card on the phone as you would on a contactless card reader.
The new option is apparently found on the “Add Payment Method” screen next to existing methods, such as manual entry.
And while the NFC has the potential to be much faster than adding your card information manually, you may still need to enter your CVV (or CVC) number for security reasons.
The Android Authority report found no proposal for compatibility, so we cannot yet say which types of cards and which issuers will be supported.
Furthermore, it is not mentioned whether this feature will be added with the upcoming release of Android 16 or as part of a minor update.
How has this not happened yet?
Personally, I feel that this rumor seems so logical that it is almost bisarr, that it is not already part of the official Google design book.
After all, the NFC technology used by contactless cards, phones and card readers works in the same way – there is nothing that prevents a phone from reading a card from a technical point of view.
It is speculative that it is possible that security concerns delayed Google’s adoption of the Tap-to-Add feature. After all, the feature must be safe so that cards cannot be added to a telephone by phone.
In any case, I will be glad to see this feature come to Google Wallet – paying contactless is a practical feature and this new feature is sure to make things even easier for users of the best Android phones.
