Govt to restructuring district administration

Islamabad:

The federal government has decided to review the legal and administrative structure of district administration across the country, where Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif conducts the preparation of recommendations within a month.

According to a notice of Cabinet Secretariat, a committee of 18 members has been composed to review existing laws and propose reforms aimed at strengthening governance, delivery of services, law and order and enforcement of local and special laws.

Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar will act as a collector, while the Federal Minister of Establishment Ahad Cheema has been appointed co-convent of the 18-member committee.

The panel also includes the lawyer, the most important federal secretaries, the chief secretaries of all four provinces, Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, as well as Nabeel Awan, Nasir Mehmood Khosa, Agha Wasif, Pasand Khan Buleidi and Naseem Sadiq.

The committee has been tasked with examining the role of district administration before and after the population in 2001 and devolution of powers, compare law enforcement and mechanisms for public order and study administrative models of other countries.

It is also authorized to propose changes in existing laws, including the Code of Criminal Procedure, and proposes new legislation to strengthen the district administration. The cabinet department will provide secretary support, while the committee may cooperate additional members if needed.
